Hyundai HED-5 i-Mode

GENEVA — Hyundai Motor is previewing advanced powertrain, seating and infotainment technologies, while offering a peek at a possible new production model, with its HED-5 i-Mode concept that debuted this week at the 2008 Geneva Auto Show.
The HED-5 is a six-passenger crossover that “hints at a future MPV,” according to Hyundai. The Korean automaker teamed with such partners as LG Electronics, Keiper and Bayer MaterialScience to incorporate new technologies in the concept, which was styled at Hyundai’s European design studio.
Bayer provided a “self-healing” paint finish that repairs scratches, and LG developed an advanced infotainment system. Keiper provided engineering support for Hyundai’s new Swivel Seat concept, in which the front passenger seat can rotate to face the second- and third-row occupants.
The HED-5 is powered by a new 2.2-liter turbodiesel that makes 212 horsepower and 340 pound-feet of torque, mated to a six-speed automatic gearbox. Hyundai said it plans to begin offering a production version of the new diesel in 2009, followed by a more advanced variant with dual-stage turbocharging in early 2011.
