Roger Federer insists he is unconcerned about his recent run of results, and insists his game only needs tweaking to be restored to his previous domination.
The Swiss star has not made a final this year and has suffered his worst start to a season since 2000 when he was still a teenager.
Federer has suffered with illness, but even when insisting he was fully fit he lost to Mardy Fish in the semi-finals of last week’s tournament at Indian Wells.
Fish’ win ended a 41-game winning streak for Federer against Americans, and he was the lowest-ranked player to beat the world number one in three years.
The man himself though is not getting too carried away with his recent results, which has seen him fail to reach a final in three straight tournaments for the first time since becoming world number one.
“I’m surprised myself it hasn’t happened more in the last five years,” Federer said. “That’s why I’m maybe not that disappointed.”
Number one
Federer will still top the rankings even if he loses his opening match at the Sony Ericsson Open this week, but the 26-year-old insists his game is not missing much.
Nothing major in his game will be overhauled by Federer, and he will just be making slight adjustments as he looks to challenge for the two Grand Slam titles he is short of tying Pete Sampras’ record of 14.
“I think I have really a lot of potential toward playing more aggressive,” Federer added.
“The rest is sort of trying to maintain good fitness and good defensive skills. My offensive skills will always be very good. I just have to continue improving little things.
“I think it’s about details at this stage of my career. I’m not going to become a different player. I don’t want to.”
